Spain set to announce decision on 'air bridge' which could let UK holidaymakers avoid quarantine

Spain is expected to announce whether it is willing to form an 'air bridge' with the UK, allowing people quarantine-free visits.

A Spanish foreign ministry source has confirmed that the UK are in talks with Spain about the bridge, which would allow travellers from both countries to leave and enter without quarantine.

Despite previous reports that Spain was not considering this option, a decision is now expected "within hours", The Mirror reports.

The source told Reuters that he expected a decision before Spain opens its borders to tourists from most European countries, including Britain, on Sunday.

The source said: "Spain is willing to be open to the United Kingdom, we are in talks with them about their quarantine.

"We are in a position to open without a quarantine."

The Daily Telegraph on Friday said the Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to announce air bridge deals with a "small number" of countries with a low rate of coronavirus.

Having to quarantine for 14 days would effectively make holiday making abroad impossible for the vast majority. So UK travellers are likely to hope that arrangements can be made with popular destinations.

But it's likely the deals will have to reciprocal: earlier this week Spain's Foreign Minister Arancha González warned that Brits could have to isolate for 14 days upon arrival if the UK retains its 14-day quarantine rule.

She said: "We will be checking what the UK will be doing and we will be in a dialogue with the UK to see whether or not we should be introducing reciprocity as they have different measures than the rest of the European Union."

She said the situation was"fluid" and said officials would "properly engage in a dialogue with the UK authorities to make sure that we both take the message that best corresponds to the health situation, which today is a little bit better in Spain than it is in the UK".

"Hopefully by the time we open our borders, the UK would have moved forward also," she added.
