Spain scraps all Covid travel rules for Brits in huge boost for half term holidays

In a huge boost for families heading out on half term holidays, Spain has scrapped the last of its Covid travel rules for UK holidaymakers.

Until this week, it had been one of 26 countries that still had Covid travel rules in place, with authorities having been expected to keep measures in place until mid-November.

Previously, Brits planning Spain holidays were still required to have either proof of full Covid vaccination or a negative Covid test if they wanted to visit.

However as of today (October 21), these measures have been lifted early, prompting the UK's Foreign Office to update its Spain travel advice to reflect the changes.

It explains: "From 21 October 2022, all COVID-19 travel restrictions for travellers to Spain have been lifted. The rules that previously applied to travellers coming to Spain no longer apply:

  • you are no longer required to show proof of being fully vaccinated
  • you are no longer required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test
  • you are no longer required to show proof of having recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months.
  • you are no longer required to complete a health control form prior to travel.

The news will no doubt come as a huge boost for families heading to the hotspot for October half term, with Spain remaining a firm favourite with UK holidaymakers.

Meanwhile for those who aren't tied to the school holiday dates, destinations such as the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands still boast balmy weather in the cooler months, making them ideal for winter sun holidays.

However, those heading to party hotspots like Majorca and Ibiza should take note of recent rules that have been brought in place as the Balearic authorities look to crack down on unruly tourists.

This has included introducing a six drinks limit on all-inclusive breaks, while last month it was announced that iconic clubs in Majorca and Ibiza could face closure as authorities are allocating 10 million euros to buy "low-category establishments" and will then close them down.

"We have to promote a production model that can simultaneously generate prosperity, employment and opportunities and do so by protecting the capacity of a territory and natural resources that are incompatible with excessive tourist pressure," said Balaeric president Francina Armengol.

It is not yet known which of the establishments would be targeted in the scheme.

Still, in a bit of a silver lining for holidaymakers, the islands have also announced plans to freeze a tourist tax for Brits visiting next summer.
