Spain's Prime Minister has given hope to holidaymakers after announcing plans to welcome overseas tourists from July.
Today, several thousand followers of Spain's far-right Vox party gathered in their cars and on motorbikes in the centre of Madrid and other cities to protest their government's handling of the coronavirus crisis.
More than 28,000 Spaniards have been confirmed to have died from coronavirus.
Spain declared a State of Emergency on March 14, which introduced a series of strict measures including significant restrictions on movement throughout the country, in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly outbreak.
But Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, speaking after the protest, has now confirmed changes to the country's travel restrictions.
The Prime Minister also offered a guarantee to visitors and locals that there will not be "any risks" for tourists or locals as the country takes steps to come out of current lockdown measures.
Mr Sanchez said: "As you know, Spain receives more than 80 million visitors a year.
"I am announcing that from July, Spain will reopen for foreign tourism in conditions of safety.
"Foreign tourists can also start planning their holidays in our country. Spain needs tourism, and tourism needs safety in both origin and destination.
"We will guarantee that tourists will not run any risks, nor will they bring any risk to our country.”
He added: "We’re sending everyone a message today: Spain will be waiting for you from July."
But strict quarantine rules for anyone returning to the UK from abroad means that only the most determined holidaymakers are likely to be able to take advantage of the country opening up.
Under the government's current rules, anyone arriving in the UK from abroad must self-isolate for 14 days and be fined if they fail to self-isolate. The government is also advising against all but essential travel.
