Spain's crushing blow for British holidaymakers over coronavirus

British holidaymakers could be stopped from travelling to Spain because of the UK's relatively high rate of coronavirus infection.

A Spanish tourism minister has raised concerns about the Covid-19 infection rate as the country prepares to open its borders to tourists, reports WalesOnline.

Maria Reyes Maroto has told officials in the UK to improve its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and bring down the infection rate before holidaymakers can land in Spain.

Spain will lift its 14-day quarantine rule for tourists from next month - starting on July 1.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made it clear that "tourists will not run any risks, nor will they bring any risks to our country."

Officials are currently working out how to gauge who will be allowed into Spain - and how to prevent people who have the virus arriving there and causing a second wave of infections.

There will also be strict social distancing measures in place in its hotels, beaches and restaurants to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.

Under current arrangements, only Spanish citizens, permanent residents or those who can prove they need to enter Spain for essential reasons are allowed into Spain.

Ms Maroto has confirmed British people wouldn't be involved in the first test run of flights landing in Spain.

She confirmed Nordic countries will be allowed first, with Covid-19 checks at airports and passengers forced to quarantine in hotels for six hours before results return.

But the Spanish government is in constant dialogue with travel firms over allowing British nationals into Spain, she added.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel.

A 14-day quarantine for flights arriving into the UK from next Monday has met with strong opposition from travel and hospitality firms. A group of 200 have supported calls for the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, to make a u-turn on the quarantine plan.
