Spain remains top choice for winter holidaymakers in poll for booking platform

Spain is likely to see an influx of UK arrivals from January onwards with data showing the nation's resorts are still the most popular destinations for holidaymakers.

Booking platform Vrbo showed the Canary Islands' resorts of Gran Canaria and Tenerife and Malaga in the Costa del Sol among the top 10 for winter sunseekers.

Sun-based destinations also contributed to 50 per cent of internet searches from British holidaymakers, with 31 per cent stating they preferred winter sun trips because it was not as crowded as a summer break.

The French ski season remains popular - especially in December - with 19 per cent of those surveyed saying winter holidays should be in snow destinations.

Despite US borders opening to vaccinated travellers last month, initial interest in the country for travel at the start of 2022 only puts one location in the top 10. Family favourite Kissimmee, which includes top tourist attractions such as Disney World, makes the top 10.

Vrbo has also reported an increase in people wanting to travel to UK destinations with their pets.

Karen Mullins, of Vrbo, said: “It’s no surprise that there is still a level of uncertainty amongst some travellers who would prefer to stay closer to home.

"But we’re pleased to see that the start of 2022 indicates there will be an influx of demand for international travel again, with confidence growing and travellers eager to re-visit their favourite destinations.”
