Spain not on Scotland's air bridge list meaning holidaymakers must still quarantine

Spain has been excluded from an approved list of countries Scots can travel to without having to quarantine upon return.

Nicola Sturgeon announced that air bridges would be created between 39 countries and territories classified as 'green' or low risk for coronavirus by the UK Government from July 10.

This means that for Scottish residents, returning from these countries, they will not be required to quarantine for 14 days.

These countries include Germany, Austria, Norway and Malta.

Although certain countries within the 'amber' category - which are at slightly higher risk - will also not be part of quarantine restrictions, Spain has not been included.

It will only apply to countries with lower or similar coronavirus infection rates as Scotland, rather than all 20 countries classified as amber by the UK Government.

Speaking at today's daily briefing, the First Minister said she "cannot in good conscience lift restrictions on people arriving from Spain."

The same restrictions are also in place for Serbia following a recent outbreak that has seen neighbouring countries close their borders with it.

Ms Sturgeon said: "This has been a very difficult decision. It is evidence driven and it is motivated only by a determination to protect Scotland as far as possible."

She said air bridges were "decided on the basis of two factors - the prevalence of the virus on each country and an assessment of the situation."

Ms Sturgeon added: "I know and am acutely aware of how important international travel is for our tourist sector and the aviation industry."
