Spain law change will cut restaurant and bar bills for holidaymakers this summer

Spain has introduced a new regulation that will have a massive impact for holidaymakers this summer. Changes to the law in the holiday hotspot means diners' bills could become cheaper.

However, since April 11, all bars and restaurants are required by law to offer free tap water as an alternative to bottled water, which is paid for by customers. The move is part of the country's drive to encourage people to reduce the consumption of plastics, especially bottles, as stated in the new regulations in the Law on Waste and Contaminated Soil for a Circular Economy, GlasgowLive reports.

It states: "Establishments in the hotel and restaurant sector will always have to offer consumers, customers or users of their services the possibility of consuming unpackaged water free of charge and complementary to the offer of the same establishment."

Previously, it was left to the discretion of bar and restaurant bosses whether to offer tap water to customers and if it should be added to the bill. New rules also encourage water fountains to be installed so that visitors and locals can refill their reusable bottles throughout the day.
