Spain, Italy and Turkey entry requirements and what documents you need

The summer holidays are in full swing and if you're heading abroad, it's crucial to know the entry requirements for your destination and documents needed to enter.

A number of holidaymakers have been denied boarding after not having the correct documentation as Brexit has enforced travel rules, with passport holders encouraged to check the expiry date before booking flight tickets.

Along with passport validity, Spain have announced British tourists may need to show proof of spending money along with following various rules as the country attempts to crack down on 'tourism of excess'.

The Balearic islands have enforced a range of restrictions and rules to control excessive drinking in the party hubs in regions of Ibiza and Mallorca.

Here's all you need to know before heading to Spain, Italy and Turkey.

Spain entry requirements

As the Foreign Travel Advice states, if you are traveling to Spain you must show valid proof of one of the following on entry:

These requirements do not apply to children under 12 years old. See ‘Children and young people’.

Documents needed for Spain

Foreign Travel Advice say that Brits may need to show a range of documents.

  • Proof of a return or onward ticket
  • Enough money for their stay
  • Proof they meet the covid-19 entry requirements

  • Proof that they have somewhere to stay in Spain

This includes proof required includes hotel booking confirmations, proof of address if visiting your own property (e.g, a second home), or an invitation from your host or proof of their address if staying with a third party, friends or family.

Italy entry requirements

As of June 1, covid-19 restrictions on entering Italy have been lifted. Italy does not require any proof of vaccination, a negative test result, or a proof of covid recovery certificate to enter the country, regardless of your vaccination status.

Italy are reminding holidaymakers that face masks aren't required on planes but all passengers entering Italy by ferry, train or coach must wear an FFP2 mask in order to enter the country.

Documents needed

As the Foreign Travel Advice warns, at the Italian border control, you may need to show:

  • Proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if visiting your own property (e.g. second home)
  • Proof of insurance for your trip. You can check the guidance on travel insurance here
  • Proof of a return or onward ticket
  • Proof that you have enough money for your stay. The minimum amount required depends on your accommodation
  • Your host must inform the local immigration office (questura) in writing within 48 hours after you arrive at their property. If not, they could be fined if they fail to comply with this Italian immigration law

Turkey entry requirements

Like Italy, Turkey has lifted all covid entry requirements from June 1. Regardless of vaccination status, holidaymakers no longer need to show a covid status or covid pass.

Documents needed for Turkey

Those going on holiday to Turkey, your passport should be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive and there should be a full blank page for the entry and exit stamps.
