Spain issues major coronavirus travel update which will impact any Brit holiday plans

Spain has issued an update to its current travel restrictions which will stop British holidaymakers entering the country.

People in Spain had strict lockdown restrictions which are currently set to continue until May 24.

Roughly half of 47 million Spaniards were introduced to softer restrictions of the country's coronavirus confinement on Monday (May 11), meaning they are beginning to socialize, shop in small establishments and enjoy a meal or a coffee in restaurants and bars with outdoor seating.

However, the country's government has extended its travel ban meaning Brits and non-EU travellers will be denied entry from today, May 15, up until June 15.

In the latest updated travel advice from the Foreign Office, from May 15, all new international arrivals entering Spain, including Spanish nationals and residents, will be required to self-isolate in their residence or hotel for a period of 14 days.

They say that movement will be limited to essential trips to supermarkets or pharmacies and those affected will be required to wear a facemask at all times in public.

Only Cross-border workers, cabin crew, lorry drivers and healthcare workers are exempt from these measures as well as travellers transiting through Spain as long as they travel home directly and do not spend the night in any establishment in Spain.

Following further border restrictions, only Spanish citizens, those who are legally resident in Spain, frontier workers or those who can prove they need to enter Spain for essential reasons will be allowed to enter the country.

Only green residency certificates will be accepted as proof of residency in Spain and British travellers who are not resident and/or not in possession of this certificate should not attempt to enter the country.

British travellers who are not resident in Spain or do not have a residency certificate have also been warned not to travel to Gibraltar and then attempt to enter Spain via the land frontier.

But, Brits will continue to be allowed to leave Spain to return to their country of residence.
