Spain holidays: Officials issue Canary Islands travel update as La Palma airport closes again

The ongoing eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island has brought airport services to yet another stand still according to Air Traffic Control officials in La Palma.

The airport had reopened to passengers in recent days, but has been temporarily closed again after a cloud of ash was thrown up into the sky once again - making is unsafe for aircrafts to land.

According to a spokesperson for the AENA airport, the runway has been coated in ash and so operations cannot resume until it is cleared and safe for landing.

This morning, the spokesperson told AFP: "The airport is not in operation at the moment, as some cleaning work needs to be done on the runways before it can reopen."

However, she reassure passengers that "the closure may not last very long."

Over 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the island as lava poured from the summit reaching the sea and releasing dangerous noxious gases into the air.

Passengers looking to travel from Ireland to La Palma are still being warned to "If you have imminent travel plans to La Palma, we recommend that you contact your tour operator/airline and accommodation provider before you travel."

Meanwhile, if If you are in an affected area, and cannot travel due to the airport closure, you should follow the advice of the local authorities.
