Spain holidays: Irish tourists warned of 'risks' after huge Covid surge in popular areas

The Government have issued a warning to Irish tourists who are planning to, or have already, travelled to Spain after a huge surge in Covid cases in a number of popular areas.

A rise in the number of positive tests in Spain in the past fortnight has seen the country's incidence rate rocket up to 456.34 cases per 100,000 population.

This fact is what has led to the Department of Foreign Affairs issuing a warning to people planning a trip abroad to Spain, asking them to be cautious of the "risks" associated with foreign travel amid the rise.

Thousands of Irish holiday hopefuls have jetted off to the likes of Spain, France, Italy and Greece after the implementation of the EU Digital Covid Certificate in July.

The pass allows people who are fully vaccinated to travel the continent, with the majority of those people opting to leave the country for sun holidays.

However, the DFA have warned that tourists they test positive for Covid-19 while in Spain they will have to self-isolate and stay in the country until their quarantine period is over.

A Department of Foreign Affairs statement said: "Covid-19 is still a threat, but with continued public health measures, vaccination and testing, it will be possible to travel internationally. You will need to plan your travel carefully and there are risks.

"If you test positive for COVID-19 while on holiday in Spain, you must isolate in line with local health requirements. You will be required to complete your isolation period before you can leave Spain.

"Please note that not all regions of Spain have dedicated quarantine hotels or facilities for those who test positive for COVID-19, and you may need to contact your accommodation provider to arrange to extend your stay.

"Costs incurred from extending your stay in Spain are at the traveller’s own expense. As such, you are strongly advised to ensure that your insurance policy provides adequate cover in the event that you need to extend your stay in Spain due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis."
