Spain holidays: Irish bar in Lanzarote reports surge in tourists from Ireland as warning issued

The owner of an Irish bar in Lanzarote has seen a "definite" increase in tourists from Ireland in the past week.

International travel resumed from Ireland last Monday and Irish holidaymakers have been jetting off in their droves to destinations like Spain and Portugal.

Emma Brennan, the owner of Brennan's Bar in Puerto del Carmen, says that publicans in the region are seeing an increased footfall since then.

There are "a good few" Irish on the Spanish island, with beaches and bars seeing much bigger crowds than in recent weeks.

This stands in contrast to April when Emma told the Irish Mirror that there was "no one" around an "only one or two" Irish tourists around.

"There's big changes this time around, now and the masks are gone outside, you don't have to wear them anymore so it's a lot more pleasant going around now," she said.

"The planes seemingly at the weekend were full coming over.

"We're in the Old Town and the Old Town isn't generally busy in the summertime, it's usually the wintertime.

"But the strip is busy with tourists now."

When asked whether there has been a surge in Irish holidaymakers in the past week, Emma said "definitely".

"You see a lot more people walking out to the beach and the beaches are full again," she explained.

"I'm not saying we're at 100% capacity but we're getting there.

"Some of the bars and restaurants are still closed but a lot of them are opening back up again, the nightclubs are opening, there's full bars so it's good.

"Up until last Thursday we were on level one but then they put us back onto level two which means only four at a table inside and six at a table outside."

It comes as a key warning has been issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs to Irish tourists heading to Spain.

People are being advised that different types of Covid-19 tests will be accepted in different jurisdictions.

While Spain recognises a Rapid Antigen Test as acceptable for entry, Ireland does not, and a full PCR test is required for any Irish tourists looking to return home.

Last week it emerged that a number of unvaccinated Irish people on holidays in Spain were having difficulty flying home due to the travel rules.

Several tourists who have tested positive for coronavirus in recent weeks are facing problems in accessing a negative test or certificate showing they have recovered from the virus.

Emma said she has not heard of Irish travellers facing difficulties with the travel restrictions in Lanzarote, but acknowledged that things might be different on the mainland.

"I don't know about mainland Spain, but for us, no one is really having problems," she said.

"No one that I've been speaking to has had any problems."

Emma added that she "can't wait" to welcome back more Irish tourists in the coming months.
