Spain Holidays: Government drop major Covid rule as influx of Irish passengers expected this midterm

The Spanish government has opted to drop one of the longest-standing Covid rules in the country ahead of an influx of Irish passengers.

According to the latest travel update, the wearing of masks outdoors will no longer be mandatory.

The announcement was welcomed by incoming tourists, however according to reports, some locals have opted to continue the measure so far.

Up until midnight on Thursday, masks had to be worn by law at beaches, on the promenade and at swimming pools.

Despite the major easing of restrictions, masks will still have to be worn when seated if it is not possible to maintain a safe distance of 1.5m with anyone outside of your household.

They are also still mandatory in enclosed spaces and on public transport.

The move comes after almost all regions decided to lift the requirement to show a Covid passport to enter bars and nightclubs.

With the midterm fast approaching, many people will be headed away for a break to the sun after the EU Council agreed to adopt “free travel” for those who are fully vaccinated.

Once your Covid Cert proves your primary vaccination series was complete no more than 270 days prior to travel, you will not be subject to other travel rules - like testing and quarantine.

If you have received your booster or additional dose, you will not be subject to the expiry rule.

The current rules detailed on the Department of Foreign Affairs states that, passengers will not be subject to further testing or quarantine requirements on entry to Spain provided they hold a valid EU DCC as evidence of either:

  • Proof of vaccination, or
  • Proof of recovery, or
  • Either a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain, or a negative antigen test taken within 24 hours prior to arrival in Spain

All Passengers must also fill out a health control form before departure.
