Brits hoping to jet off to Spain for some winter sun might now face strict coronavirus restrictions, as some locations have tightened rules in response to surging cases.
The Balearic Islands — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera — are currently at level three, while Tenerife — one of the Canary Islands — has shot up to the level four, which has the tightest restrictions for locals and tourists.
The stricter level 4 rules means pubs and restaurants will all shut at midnight and public transport is capped at 75 percent capacity.
Nightclubs are capped at 25 percent and vaccine passports are needed to enter indoor venues.
A maximum of six people are allowed to meet, and the rule is not just for indoor gatherings but outdoors too.
Spas, jacuzzis and saunas are closed, and in a move that will impact holidaymakers even more, pools operate at 33 percent capacity.
For those hoping to head to the beach to sun themselves, beaches are being held at 50 percent capacity and “a prior appointment may be required” for some venues, according to the tourist boards for the various islands.
Level 3 restrictions still mean beaches can only be 50 percent full and you may need an appointment to visit one — so travellers heading to a Spanish destination with a lower covid restriction level will still face rules.
Bars and restaurants can stay open until 1am in level 3, but you can still only meet as a maximum of six in a group.
These levels remain in place until next Wednesday — January 20 — when they will be reviewed.
