Spain holidays: Blow for Irish tourists as rising Covid sees big changes in holiday hotspot rules

Many parts of Spain are reimposing some restrictions as the country struggles with rising Covid-19 infections.

While many of the strict restrictions such as curfews, closures of restaurants and the use of face masks outdoors, have now been lifted, the recent rise in infections and fears of the new Delta strain of the virus means there are several restrictions still in place.

And new ones are being added in the ever-changing situation.

Each region in Spain is different with restrictions based on the virus rates in the area.

As of August 2, the country has a 14-day Covid-19 incidence rate of 783.67 - considerably higher than Ireland's 304.24.

Restrictions in place

This official travel safe Spain website can tell you exactly what restrictions are in place in the area you are going.

For example, anyone hoping to head to Ibiza or any of the Balaeric islands, nightclubs remain closed and all pubs and restaurants must shut by 2am.

When it comes to dining, it's maximum 12 people per table outdoors and 6 indoors.

Most regions have curfews, indoor dining number limits and reduced capacity.

In the UK, talks are already underway about placing Spain under an ‘amber plus’ category that would mean holidaymakers returning would be subject to mandatory quarantine.
