Spain explosion: One killed and six injured in huge blast at Tarragona plant

One person has died and six people are injured after an explosion at a chemical factory in Spain, according to reports.

The Catalonian town of Tarragona was rocked by the blast on Tuesday afternoon, prompting emergency services to declare a chemical emergency alert.

A tweet by officials said the blast was a "chemical accident" and told people nearby to stay inside and close their windows.

Spanish daily El Mundo, quoting official sources, said one person has died and six people were injured.

Four of those injured are understood to have suffered critical burns.

Footage showed flames reaching hundreds of feet into the sky above the town.

Since 2015, the city has housed a 3,000 acre (1200 hectare) "chemical hub", ChemMed, that was described as the largest of its kind in southern Europe.

The Catalan fire brigade initially said it had rescued three injured people, who were being attended by emergency services. Around 20 emergency vehicles were at the site.

The service said no information was immediately available on possible deaths or injuries.

The explosion led to a fire, it said.

Residents posted videos showing the aftermath of the blast, with flames and a big column of black smoke emerging from an area dotted with big industrial tanks.

Trains between Tarragona and neighbouring Port Aventura were suspended on police orders, the train operator Rodalies said, while the regional transport authority said some roads had been closed.

Some local residents told local Tarragona Radio that the blast could be heard from miles away.

Tarragona is located 71 miles southwest of Barcelona, the regional capital of Spain's Catalonia region.
