Spain expected to remove mask mandate this month

Spain is expected to lift its face mask mandate later this month, it has been revealed. The country's health minister, Caolina Darias, says she will propose it at a cabinet meeting on April 19.

If, as expected, the motion passes, the mandate would be lifted the following day, meaning Brits travelling to Spain for the latter part of the Easter holidays would be able to leave their masks in the hotel. However, Darias said the mandate would remain on public transport and in medical centres.

Some airlines are also still requiring face coverings, so you may still need to take masks with you just in case.

Over 92 per cent of Spaniards over the age of 12 have received at least two doses of the covid-19 vaccine, meaning pressure on hospitals in the latest wave has not been as high as in other countries. The requirement to wear a face covering in outdoor public settings was dropped in February.

And in March, Spain said people testing positive but who experienced only mild or no symptoms were not legally required to remain at home.

The entry requirements for people travelling from the UK to Spain mean everyone must present a valid Spanish health control form. You must also prove that you have been fully vaccinated against covid-19 or that you have recovered from the disease in the past six months.

There is no need to test beforehand or self-isolate on arrival, but Spanish health authorities reserve the right to carry out further testing on arrival.
