Spain 'desperate for UK tourists to return in summer' as it praises vaccine drive

Spain is "desperate" to welcome British tourists back this summer, the country's tourism minister has said.

Fernando Valdes today said officials are encouraged by the speed of the UK's vaccination programme and said vaccine passports are "going to help us".

Non-essential foreign travel is banned until at least May 17, with the government set to introduce a traffic-light system determining quarantine rules.

Spain, where 77,364 people have died from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, is expected to be classified as amber, according to a report which surfaced at the weekend.

This means that Brits returning from holidays would have to quarantine at home for 10 days after they get back.

Mr Valdes told Sky News that the country is "desperate to welcome" UK visitors this summer.

He said: "I think we will be ready here in Spain. We also think that the vaccination scheme in the UK is going pretty well, so hopefully we'll be seeing this summer the restart of holidays."

He added that certificates enabling holidaymakers to prove they have either been vaccinated or recently tested are "going to help us".

The amber list will feature what the government determines to be 'moderate-risk countries', with factors including numbers of Covid cases and a vaccination programme.

More than 12 million have received at least one Covid vaccine dose in Spain, compared to 33 million in the UK.

It is not yet known which countries will be on which list, with the government due to share an update in early May.

Spain has reopened its borders to Brits - although people in the UK are not allowed to travel abroad for a holiday.

Mr Valdés previously said that the Spanish government was in talks with the UK regarding making travel between the two countries easier in time for summer, for example by introducing a 'green corridor'.

Modelling by the travel industry found that just eight countries - Ireland, the United States, Israel, Gibraltar, Iceland, Malta, New Zealand and Australia are likely to be defined as 'green'.

This means Brits will not have to quarantine unless they test for Covid, it is claimed.
