Spain could bring in major travel change at the end of this week

Spain is maintaining the country's major travel restrictions for any travellers looking to fly away in the coming week.

The popular holiday destination has said that it will continue to make sure travellers from the UK either have proof of vaccination or a recovery certificate.

But from Sunday May 15, it looks as though these rules will change.

A statement from the Ministry of the Interior regarding the restrictions said: “This order will take effect from 12:00 pm on July 22, 2020, until 12:00 pm on May 15, 2022, without prejudice to its eventual modification to respond to a change in circumstances or new recommendations in the field of the European Union”.

Spain restrictions on unvaccinated travellers remains in place until May 15 (PA)

After May 15, it is expected that unvaccinated travellers will be able allowed to enter without proof of recovery from Covid-19 but the Spanish Government has yet to confirm this.

At the moment, unvaccinated travellers aged 18 and over can only enter Spain by showing proof of recovery from Covid within the six months before travel.

Children aged between 12 and 17 can enter with proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before arriving in Spain, while under-12s are exempt from all travel restrictions.

Travellers going on holiday from the UK over the age of 18 who have not been vaccinated or recovered from the virus and who fall under the exemption list can also travel to Spain, provided that they present a negative COVID-19 test result.

However, the exemption list includes only some specific categories of travellers, such as health professionals, transport personnel, diplomatic and consular personnel, students, and highly qualified workers, among others.

Recently Spain has lifted rules domestically. Since April 20, the obligation to wear a mask in indoor and outdoor public areas in Spain has been lifted.

The obligation to wear a mask remains effective for some specific places like healthcare facilities, pharmacies, public transport, and places, among others.
