Spain coronavirus death toll sees lowest daily rise in nearly three weeks in sign of hope for country

Spain has reported its lowest daily death count in nearly three weeks in a sign of hope for the country.

Officials said the number of reported deaths among coronavirus patients between Friday and Saturday had increased by 510, the lowest figure in 19 days.

The death toll in Spain now stands at 16,353.

However, the country saw a slight day-on-day rise in confirmed infections, with 4,830 new cases reported, compared with 4,576 the day before.

A month-long national lockdown has helped Spain slow the daily increase in the numbers of infected people from more than 20 per cent two weeks ago to around 3 per cent.

The highest daily spike in the number of reported deaths came on April 2, when 950 were recorded.

Spain has confirmed 161,852 infections and 16,353 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak, making it and Italy the hardest hit countries in Europe .

More than 59,000 Spaniards have recovered from Covid-19.
