Spain confirms new rules for UK visitors amid fears over spread of Covid variant

British visitors to Spain will face strict new entry regulations later this week in a massive crackdown on new infections.

The country's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has confirmed the nation will require evidence of a negative PCR test or the complete vaccine programme for travellers arriving from the UK.

He said Spain still looked forward to welcoming UK visitors but said there was concerning over the prevalence of the emerging Delta variant.

Mr. Sánchez justified the new measure given that the UK data coming shows infection rates "well above 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants based on the prior 14 days."

It is expected that this legislative change will be published today (June 29) and the new measure will come into effect 72 hours later on July 2.

This new legislation is for arrivals for the whole of Spain, including the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

But, whilst much of the country remains on the UK’s amber list for international travel, the Balearic Islands have been added to the green list meaning visitors will not need to quarantine on return to the UK from 4am tomorrow (Wednesday).

Despite this change in Spanish entry requirements to ensure the protection of both local residents and visitors, Spain's government has reinforced the value of its UK visitors and stressed that British guests remain welcome.
