Spain coach sends message to David de Gea and Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga over No.1 battle

The battle for the Spain number one jersey has taken another twist.

Kepa Arrizabalaga seemed to have nailed down that position after Manchester United's David de Gea saw his form for La Roja come under intense scrutiny following a poor showing at last summer's World Cup and his performances at club level towards the end of last season didn't improve.

And judging by his mistake in the shock 2-1 loss against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford last month, there's an argument to be made that real de Gea is yet to show up this season.

With that said, Kepa is yet to keep a clean sheet in five appearances across all competitions for the Blues so far this season.

Spain face Romania on Thursday and the Faroe Islands on Sunday in their Euro 2020 qualification double header, with the two goalkeepers vying to start.

Coach Robert Moreno has revealed his plan for the duo and it would appear they'll both get a chance to stake their claim over the next few days.

"If the goalkeepers are at the level that they have shown up to now, it's possible to alternate them," Moreno told reporters .

"I don't believe that in a national team it's crucial that the same goalkeeper plays all the games.

"I'm expectant but I don't see it as a debut having felt that way against the Faroe Islands and Sweden. I'm looking forward to the game and to do well."

In the summer Kepa  did send a message to his rival by insisting he plans to be Spain's first-choice in between the sticks in the foreseeable future leading up to next summer's European Championships.

"I'm going to continue working as I have until now, doing my best at my club to keep the confidence of the coach,"  Kepa  told  Marca .

"Whoever plays will do very well. Of course I understand that David is sad, we all train to play and then it is the decision of the coach, and it is up to you to respond well.

"We are always surrounded by such controversies, but we must take it naturally.

"I'm happy to play, to help the team and to finish the season in the best way possible.

"The season has been very long, but before we left we had these two very important commitments. We are happy to finish in the best way possible."
