Spain brings in two week quarantine for overseas travellers

All people coming into Spain from abroad will have to go into a two-week quarantine from Friday May 15, the Spanish government has announced.

The incoming travellers will have to remain locked in and will only be allowed to exit for grocery shopping, go to health centres and in case of “situation of need”, an official order published on Tuesday said.

The quarantine has been enforced for all travellers incoming to Spain between May 15 and May 24, when the state of emergency is due to end.

But if the emergency state is extended for another two weeks, the travel restrictions will continue to apply - reports El Pais.

Health authorities may contact individuals in quarantine to check on their health status, and anyone who develops symptoms is instructed to call the regional health services.

Travel agencies and transportation companies will have to inform prospective customers about these requirements when travel arrangements are made.

Airlines will provide customers with a Passenger Location Card that passengers must have with them when they enter Spain.

On Sunday Boris Johnson brought in a similar measure for people entering the UK.

In his address to the nation Mr Johnson said that in order to prevent re-infection from abroad he was "serving notice".

He said: "I am serving notice that it will soon be the time – with transmission significantly lower – to impose quarantine on people coming into this country by air."

It was not outlined tonight how long this may have to go on for as the Prime Minister did not address a specific timescale.

But according to government sources, quarantine will be for 14 days.

It said that passengers will be asked to give Border Force officials an address where they will spend their quarantine via a digital form.

Authorities are set to carry out spot-checks to ensure the measure is followed.

The rules will not apply to travellers from Ireland.
