Spain brings in strict 14-day quarantine for overseas visitors with tough restrictions on movement

Tourists entering Spain will be quarantined for 14 days as the country continues its way out of coronavirus lockdown.

The Ministry of Health announced the plans which will come into force on May 15 and continue until the end of the State of Emergency on May 24. The government will then decide if it will continue further.

Visitors will have to remain locked in and will only be allowed to exit for grocery shopping, go to health centres and in case of “situation of need”, an official order said.

But if the emergency state is extended for another two weeks, the travel restrictions will continue to apply.

Travel agencies and tour operators have been instructed to inform travellers of the new measures before selling tickets to Spanish destinations.

Airlines must ensure passengers complete a Passenger Location Card upon arrival in Spain.

During the quarantine period, visitors to Spain will have to stay in their accommodation, and can only go out to buy food, pharmaceuticals and basic necessities or get assistance from Health Centres or Hospitals.

They must wear a face covering when heading outdoors or in confined spaces.

"The favourable evolution of the epidemiological situation in Spain and the beginning of the escalation make it necessary to strengthen control measures by applying quarantine measures to persons coming from abroad for 14 days,” according to the Spanish Government Order.

Health authorities may contact visitors in quarantine for a follow-up and if they display symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath or other conditions linked to coronavirus they should immediately contact medical services dedicated to visitors in quarantine, the Order stressed.
