Spain-bound easyJet flight forced to land in France because of medical emergency

A holiday flight to Spain was forced to land in France when a passenger required urgent medical assistance. The easyJet service between Belfast and Alicante was forced to land in Brest, after a passenger became unwell and needed help.

Passengers were made to wait around two hours on Tuesday before setting off again to their original destination Alicante, which is the main airport for the popular Costa Blanca resort of Benidorm. Although the condition of the passenger seeking medical help is not known, easyJet said that the wellbeing of its customers and crew are its main priority, reports the Mirror.

An airline spokesperson said: "easyJet can confirm that flight EZY6701 from Belfast to Alicante diverted to Brest due to a passenger on board requiring urgent medical assistance. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is our highest priority.”

The incident occurred after easyJet was forced to cancel several services because of coronavirus-related staff absences and delays in processing security checks for new airline and ground crew. But, despite the disruption, the Luton-based low cost carrier said its summer flight bookings were exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

The airline said more bookings for summer flights were made during the past couple of months than in the same period in 2019. The airline expects to operate “near” pre-pandemic levels of flying this summer.

It operated at 80 per cent of 2019 capacity in the first three months of this year.
