SpaceX: The Irish rescue team on stand-by to save astronauts in worst case scenario

Ireland's Coast Guard were on stand-by on Sunday evening in case the Space-X launch went wrong.

The Rescue 115 helicopter crew had planned and drilled procedure in case the Elon Musk created space shuttle had any problems.

If the dragon capsule had encountered issues it could have fallen and landed off the coast of Clare - when the Irish crew would have been called into action.

Luckily, the mission was a success when it launched late on Sunday and the team arrived at the Space Station in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Rescue 115 said on Sunday: "Rescue 115 currently on stand-by for SpaceX, if things go wrong there is a chance it could land in the sea off Clare.

"And we will be the first air asset on scene, planning all done. Our engineering team have our aircraft ready to go and flight crew are ready for the call."

This is not an unusual procedure and is the second time this year the crew have been on standby for a SpaceX launch.

Thankfully on both occasions there has been no need for their services.
