The United State's new commercial astronaut capsule has splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida's coast after a six-day test flight.

SpaceX's Dragon capsule had undocked from the International Space Station to begin the journey back earlier on Friday.

It pulled away from the orbiting lab with a test dummy named Ripley as its lone occupant after delivering crew supplies and equipment to the orbiting laboratory.

The splashdown shortly before 2pm on Friday marked the final hurdle of the nearly week-long test flight.

The Dragon launched on Saturday on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Along with cargo bound for the space station, the spacecraft was carrying a test device fitted with sensors to collect data about potential effects on humans travelling in the Dragon for critical phases like ascent, entry and landing.

Canadian station astronaut David Saint-Jacques was the first to enter the Dragon capsule when it arrived and the last to leave.

He said he found the capsule "very slick" and called it business class.

The test flight marks a significant step towards returning to the US the capability to launch astronauts on a US-built spacecraft.

NASA astronauts have been riding Russian rockets since space shuttles retired eight years ago.
