Space shuttle Enterprise hitches a ride to New York

The space shuttle Enterprise was hitching a piggyback ride over New York skies on Friday. According to NASA, the shuttle, which was strapped to the the back of a 747, took off from Washington Dulles airport at 9.45am, bound for New York.

It's the second major city flyover in about two weeks; shuttle Discovery flew over Washington DC on 19 April, and was met with a ceremony upon its final return from the skies.

Enterprise never served as a working shuttle; it was used instead as a test vehicle. It will stay at JFK airport in New York for a few weeks before being transported up the Hudson river to the Intrepid sea, air and space museum in June. It will go on public display there in the summer.

We've collected photos from Twitter in a Storify below and will update it throughout the flight. Follow along with NASA's live tweets here and submit your photo using #spottheshuttle.
