(Picture: NASA)Telescopes have picked up unexpected “luminous echoes” when researchers from Stanford University were examining a supermassive black hole 800 million light years away.
Scientists say this is the first time that light has been detected behind a black hole.
Because the gravitational pull from black holes bends light around themselves, this apparently gave scientists their first glimpse of what lies behind.
A tsunami warning was issued after a strong and shallow earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck the Alaskan peninsula late on Wednesday.
The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 10.15pm local time, happened at a depth of about 22 miles. The warning has now been dropped.
