Space Jam sequel: LeBron James confirms new film title along with logo

LeBron James has shared the official logo of the Space Jamsequel along with its now-confirmed title Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The much-loved original 1996 Space Jam movie contained both live-action and animated elements. Basketball player Michael Jordan starred alongside characters from the Looney Tunes universe.

The sports comedy presents a fictionalised account of what happened between Jordan’s initial retirement from the NBA in 1993 and his comeback in 1995.

In the film, Jordan is enlisted by the Looney Tunes to help them win a basketball match against the Monstars, who are working for Mr Swackhammer (voiced by Danny DeVito). Mr Swackhammer is the ruthless owner of the intergalactic amusement park Moron Mountain, who seeks to enslave the Looney Tunes as his newest attractions.

The sequel was confirmed back in September 2018, with Lakers legend LeBron James cast in what is his first major acting role. He has previously appeared in films including Amy Schumer's comedy, Trainwreck.

Posting on Instagram, James shared a video of himself wearing a cap emblazoned with Space Jam: A New Legacy’s new logo.

Ryan Coolger of Black PantherandCreed will produce, while Malcom D Lee who made Girls Trip and Night School will direct the film.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, James expressed his excitement for the film: “The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie”.

“I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people [with Black Panther].”

Filming is set to finish in March of this year, with the release date scheduled for 16 July 2021.
