Space Jam 2 is reportedly struggling to secure cameos from basketball’s top players.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, executive producer LeBron James ”hasn’t been able to close some of those deals” for the forthcoming sequel. The original film, released in 1996, saw Michael Jordan joined by the likes of Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues.
Hoops Hype’s Bryan Kalbrosky claimed that the issue may come down to pay, although industry insiders have said the weekly rate is actually quite high for a cameo role.
Space Jam 2 will mark LeBron’s second high-profile acting role, having previously won adoration for his role alongside Amy Schumer in 2015’s Trainwreck.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will produce the movie, with Terence Nance – creator of HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness – directing.
The film will potentially shoot this summer, with a release date set for 16 July 2021.
