Spa Focus: How The New Six Senses Uluwatu Promises A Different Kind Of Spiritual Experience

Whether you opt for a Sky Suite or a two-bed villa, a stay at the cliff-top Six Senses Uluwatu in Bali will be sure to give you an elevated experience of the Indonesian island, which has long welcomed travellers who on a quest for harmony and spirituality.

The resort has lofty views over the ocean and beyond.

Opened in August last year, and found on the island’s south-western tip, the new resort offers a pared-back design, giving the spotlight to its more dramatic natural features – it overlooks the famous Uluwatu Temple, as well as offering magical Indian Ocean views throughout the resort.

The terraced swimming pools.

Villas come with private pools, and offer a streamlined, sophisticated look with plenty of natural wood and flashes of oceanic colours. Rest and relaxation is key, with thoughtful detailing given to enhancing sleep – handmade mattresses are by Naturalmat, organic pillows and duvets by Hanse, and organic cotton sheets by Beaumont & Brown.

Many villas have outdoor showers and terrace-based Jacuzzis so you can truly soak up the views. Built with local wood, and using heat-absorbing lava rock in the roofing, to keep rooms cool, there’s a clear eco awareness throughout. Across the three restaurants, for example, locally-sourced or grown-on-site ingredients are used and the natural Republic of Soap in-room toiletries are made in Indonesia. There’s also an Earth Lab –where the property showcases sustainability initiatives that support communities and ecosystems, with guests being invited to reconnect with the natural world and learn some simple life hacks that will allow them to make a difference.

Three standout restaurants includes Crudo, which is a Nikkei style sushi-ceviche bar, inspired by Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. Rocka, meanwhile, has a farm-to-table approach with a Balinese-influenced menu, while Rocka Edge gives foodies an insight into the working kitchen with a Chef’s Table and open kitchen.

While there are also two dramatic terraced pools and even a cooking school and organic garden (the latter is still in the planning stages), it goes without saying – given this is Bali – that at the heart of the resort lies the spa and its innovative wellness offering.

To get there you cross a pretty lily pond, the sound of trickling water already putting you in a zen mood. Locally-inspired treatments are offered across 10 treatment rooms, together with an extensive menu of signature therapies, which embrace a ‘farm to massage’ concept.

It begins with a full body massage followed by the Lular body scrub continuing with an application of cooling yoghurt and then a herbal bath.
