SAITAMA -- Fueki Syoyu Brewing Co., a soy sauce maker based in Kawajima, Saitama Prefecture, opened the Kinbue Syoyu Park in November to introduce the traditional method of brewing soy sauce in wooden barrels.
At the facility, visitors can learn how soy sauce is made by observing the entire production process.
"I hope people will learn more about authentic soy sauce," said Kichigoro Fueki, 39, the company's 12th-generation president.
Fueki Syoyu Brewing, which has been in business for 230 years, continues the tradition of making soy sauce in large wooden barrels, using soybeans and wheat produced in the prefecture.
In response to a recent trend of activities involving distinctive regional experiences, the firm decided to renovate some of its buildings and create a facility with a theme-park atmosphere.
The facility is divided into four areas: dining, in which visitors can enjoy homemade udon noodles with soy sauce; learning, in which visitors can take part in a factory tour to understand precisely how soy sauce is made; buying, where a freeze-dried version of soy sauce is one of the products on offer, along with popular items such as soy sauce-flavored buttercream biscuits; and playing, which features a large wooden barrel that both adults and children can play in.
The factory tour is free and held three times a day at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. On Mondays, the tour is held only twice in the afternoon. For more information, contact info@kinbue.jp.
