FORT WORTH, Texas _ Southwest Airlines said it canceled an additional 300 flights on Friday as it attempts to get its operations back on track following a computer outage on Wednesday.
The Dallas-based carrier said its technology systems have been fully restored but it has displaced flight crews that led to the additional cancellations. The airline canceled 1,150 flights Wednesday and Thursday.
"We extend a heartfelt apology to our employees and our customers who are inconvenienced by the disruption in service," the carrier said in a statement. "We appreciate their patience as we continue our work to make this right."
Southwest said it has extended its flexible travel accommodations for passengers who have tickets to travel between Wednesday July 20 and Tuesday July 26. Those customers have two weeks from their original departure date to rebook their trips at no additional cost.
On Wednesday afternoon, Southwest had multiple computer systems go down as a router failed and then the backups failed as well, the carrier's chief executive, Gary Kelly, told investors on Thursday. Customers were unable to check in for flights or print luggage tags from self-check-in kiosks at airports. The airline's website was also unavailable for most of the day.
The carrier canceled 700 flights on Wednesday and another 450 flights on Thursday as it dealt with the outage, and hundreds of flights were delayed.
