A man has been knifed to death in broad daylight in a park in south-east London.

Witnesses said the stabbing happened next to a new playground in Southwark Park, Rotherhithe, on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to reports of a man "lying injured" just before 1pm. London’s Air Ambulance was also scrambled.

Paramedics battled to save the man, who was aged in his 30s, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leader of Southwark Council, Peter John, tweeted: "Horrified to hear of the fatal stabbing of a man in Southwark Park this afternoon.

"This kind of violence is always unacceptable but something especially awful about it happening in a place for all ages of leisure and escape. Thinking of all those affected today."

Gomm Road gate was closed while a police investigation was carried out.

A Met Police spokeswoman told the Standard on Wednesday evening that a crime scene remained in place.

She added: "The man's next of kin have now been informed. No arrests have been made."

Anyone with information concerning this fatal stabbing is urged to call police on 101 quoting CAD 3632/31OCT or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.
