Southville named as second-best place to live in the South West by The Sunday Times

Southville has been named as the second-best place to live in South West by The Sunday Times.

The popular area of Bristol which is the only area of the city to make the top 10, just missed out on the top spot to Topsham in Devon.

Sometimes referred to as ‘lower Clifton’, some say the area has all that Clifton does but at half the price - with its colourful terraces and independent shops.

It also boasts the Tobacco Factory – the theatre, restaurant and artspace  which regularly hosts indie theatre shows and art exhibitions.

Renters to get more protection from landlords in 12 Bristol areas

The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide rates places on a wide range of factors, from employment, schools and broadband speed to culture, community spirit and local shops.

The loose grid of attractive period houses sandwiched between Wapping Wharf, the urban hub that’s a highlight of harbourside, and North Street, impressed the judges.

Bristol was crowned the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday paper in 2017 but lost out to Frome last year.

Someone has been going around putting 'stolen' signs on Clifton's lampposts

The list is compiled using ‘robust statistics’ and the judges combine the hard data with their own "on-the-ground experience" and insight.

How much does it cost to live in Southville?

A starter house price in Southville costs £238,752, a mid-market property costs £414,275 and a top of the range pad will set you back £307,333 - according to The Sunday Times.

This nod to Southville comes ahead of the full reveal of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, featuring 101 locations across the UK, including the overall winner, which is published this Sunday (April 14).

Helen Davies, The Sunday Times Home editor said: “Finding our very own best place to live now feels more important than ever, for our wellbeing and wealth, happiness and health.

“This year we were looking for community spirit along with convenience and culture.

"There is so much going on around the country, and so many great places that the choice was a hard one.”
