Southside section of the Grand Canal left without water after it was sucked through a faulty sewer

A section of the Grand Canal has been left without water after it was sucked through a faulty sewer.

The 750 metre stretch of the famous waterway at Suir Road in Inchicore was completely drained after the trunk sewer collapsed on Sunday.

No sewage was released into the surrounding environment following the collapse.

The sewer remains operational and there is no impact on local homes and businesses.

An Irish Water spokeswoman said: "The section of canal was drained while repairs take place.

"Irish Water is working with Waterways Ireland to repair the canal bank and restore flows on the canal as soon as possible.

"Once this has been completed Irish Water will continue to work with Waterways Ireland to deliver an appropriate long term solution.

"In accordance with protocol, Irish Water has informed the EPA of the incident."

It is understood the canal will be closed for several weeks to undergo repairs.

Inland Fisheries Ireland have collected around 1,000 fish, including eel and pike, and moved them to another part of the canal.

A temporary dam will be put in place at the affected section of the canal, which will not be refilled until repairs are completed.
