Southport stabbing victim remains in serious condition in hospital

A man remains in a serious condition in hospital today after being stabbed several times in Southport .

The shocking attack followed a drunken brawl only yards from a busy music festival yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Southport Promenade at 3.40pm after a man in his 40s was found injured in gardens opposite the the Royal Clifton Hotel.

The incident happened only yards from where hundreds of people were enjoying Southport Music Festival in the sunshine.

The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of what were believed to be serious knife wounds. Today his condition was described as serious but stable.

A 43-year-old man from Southport, who was detained nearby and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder , remains in custody for questioning.

Guests in the Royal Clifton, who were attending a wedding, described a group of unruly drunken men loitering in a bus shelter.

One man said: "We went out for photos and they were getting pretty lairy. They were shouting things while we were getting our photos taken.

"We went back in and when we came out it had happened, all the police were there."

The ECHO understands the victim was part of the group and no bystanders were injured while a woman was taken to hospital as a precaution after getting knocked down in the melee.
