The organisers of Southport's annual Mad Dog road race have announced that they have cancelled Sunday's event due to

Merseyside is set to be battered by high winds and heavy rain tomorrow as Storm Ciara sweeps across the country.

The organisers of the Mad Dog 10k race have said that they have been forced to cancel the popular event due to weather warning issued by the Met Office.

The news is likely to have left thousands of runners disappointed. The event, organised by Southport Hesketh Round Table, raises cash for local good causes.

A spokesman for the race said: "So sorry, but we were ultimately left no choice but to cancel this years event. On the afternoon of 8th Feb the weather warning increased to Amber. Your safety is our priority.

"We thought we could go ahead on a yellow warning, but the worsening weather outlook made the event impossible.

"This decision has only just been made and further announcements will follow.

"Very sorry, but, we are sure all will agree that no run is worth a risk to life and safety."

Andrew Brown, founder of StandUpForSouthport, said: "Really sad to hear that this Sunday’s Mad Dog 10K race in Southport has just been cancelled.

"Sensible decision taken after much deliberation by the organisers. Gutted for them. It will be back."
