Southport's British Musical Fireworks Championships cancelled due to bad weather

The British Musical Fireworks Championships has been cancelled this evening due to the weather.

It was due to take place across the weekend with seven 15 minute displays and more than two tonnes of explosive material planned to be used.

However in a statement from Sefton Council's tourism team the decision to cancel the event tonight was "disheartening" and was taken after assessing the safety of its customers.

Those who had purchased tickets for this evening show will be given a full refund.

It's not clear at this stage whether tomorrow and Sunday's event will go ahead and we'll keep you updated as soon as we know.

A statement from Sefton Council tourism team said: "Due to the changing wind conditions, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the event on Friday 27th September.

"It is unfortunately a risk with the nature of this event and this is very disheartening for everybody involved, but the safety of our customers is our primary concern.

"Any tickets for tonight will automatically be refunded and will take 7-10 business days."
