Southmead water leak: Residents could lose supply

A fire hydrant leak in Southmead could cause locals to lose their water supply, Bristol Water has warned.

Water has been seen shooting up from Greystoke Avenue since around 12.30pm today (March 11) near the junction with Arnside Road, Southmead's main shopping area.

A Bristol Water spokesperson said: "We’re aware that a fire hydrant is leaking at Greystoke Avenue after being damaged.

"All customers remain in water. However, we might need to briefly interrupt the water supplies of some nearby customers shortly so that we can make the repair. We’re at the scene now.

"Most often, when fire hydrants leak like this, it is the result of an unauthorised third party using the hydrant. However, it is too difficult to fully assess given the volume of water.

"Fire hydrants should only be used by those trained and authorised to do so, as they are an essential piece of kit for the fire service. We thank customers for their patience.”
