Southmead man jailed for series of assaults on his partner

Assaulting his partner three times in a fortnight cost a Southmead man a prison sentence.

Scaffolder Jamie Manton admitted incidents in which he turned up at Sabrina Barrett's home last year and attacked her.

Manton, 35, of Eastleigh Road, pleaded guilty to battery on November 30 and two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on December 4 and 13.

Judge Martin Picton jailed him for 18 months.

The judge told Manton: "These were three attacks on your then partner, separated by a few days each one.

"Each was an attack in her own home. Each attack was when you were in drink.

"Each one was frightening for her.

"It is a horrible experience to be assaulted in your own home.

"This series of offences can only be met by immediate custody and that is the right thing to do."

The judge handed Manton a five-year restraining order banning him from all contact with the complainant.

Nicholas Lee, prosecuting via video link, told Bristol Crown Court Manton had been made the subject of a domestic violence protection order designed to keep Miss Barrett safe, which he had breached.

Mr Lee told Bristol Crown Court Manton turned up at her home drunk and uninvited on November 30.

After she told him to leave he grabbed her bottom lip and cut it, the court heard.

Mr Lee said Manton returned to her home on December 4 and let himself in with a key he had obtained.

After she told him to leave he tried to stop her telephoning for help by standing on her hand, cutting her middle finger.

The court heard she managed to call police, Manton left, and she was taken to Southmead Hospital where she received three stitches to her finger.

On December 13 Manton - who was wanted for the assaults - told Miss Barrett he had nowhere to stay and she allowed him to sleep on her sofa, the court heard.

Mr Lee told the court: "She says he became aggressive to her.

"He asked her if she had given a statement to police and called her a liar."

The court heard Manton verbally abused her and grabbed her neck in both hands, momentarily preventing her from breathing.

When she told him to get out he pleaded with her not to call police, but she did so and he was arrested in a nearby alley.

Manton also admitted assaulting an emergency worker on October 19 last year, after kicking a police constable in the chest at the Arnos Vale Hotel.

Rupert Russell, defending, said alcohol was the root cause of his remorseful client's offending, and he knew it.

Mr Russell said: "He accepts the relationship is over.

"He clearly has issues with anger and how he behaves in drink."
