Southern Rail apologises after offering customer £10k ticket for single trip from London Bridge to Gatwick

A rail firm has apologised after a customer was offered a £10,000 ticket for a single journey between London Bridge and Gatwick Airport.

Lucy Watson was shocked to find a ticket machine displayed the inflated price for the short trip on a Southern Rail service.

She shared an image of the staggering price on Twitter, which also showed the price she would pay on Thameslink a train would be £11.

Govia Thameslink Railway, which owns both services, said the price displayed was a mistake and was caused by a “technical glitch”.

In statement, it added: “We apologise for any inconvenience."

It came just one day after a price rise of 3.1 per cent for rail fares across Britain was met with uproar.

The mishap also coincides with the release of a new 26-30 age group railcard, which offers a third off fares.

"Ironically, I'm still in the online queue for the 26-30 railcard," Lucy told MyLondon.
