What’s Going To Happen

Southern Miss gets to start out against a high-powered Alcorn State team that came up with a strong defensive performance last year, too. 

The defending SWAC champions have a slew of dangerous playmakers who’ll push the USM D, with QB Noah Johnson an all-around yardage machine and RB De’Shawn Waller 1,215-yard, 12-touchdown all-star with home run hitting speed. 

But they have to go against a loaded Golden Eagle defense. 

USM finished third in the nation in total D last season, and now it gets back more than enough key parts – including seven all-stars – to keep the Braves from going off. But can the Golden Eagle offense do its part to keep up if Alcorn State plays well out of the gate? 

Give this game to the defensive side for the Golden Eagles, but the offense will be just inconsistent enough to worry – the killer Brave pass rush will be an issue for a full four quarters – with road games at Mississippi State, Troy and Alabama to follow.
