Southern Florida locale ranks among the world’s best places to watch a sunset

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Floridians have always known Key West is one of the best places in the world to view a sunset, and now it’s official.

Bounce, a travel-related website, rated Key West as the seventh-best place in the world to glimpse a sunset.

Key West is one of eight places in the United States to make the list of 46 global locations. And, it’s the only place in Florida that’s listed.

Perhaps the most popular place to watch a sunset in Key West is well-known Mallory Square, where admirers gaze out into the Gulf of Mexico and applaud when the sun gently eases below the horizon.

Santorini, Greece, was ranked as the best place in the world to watch a sunset — followed by Bali, Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, and Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park.

Other U.S. locations that made the cut: Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., (No. 19); Sedona, Arizona, (No. 22); Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park (No. 23); and Santa Monica, California (No. 44).

Bounce compiled their picks by comparing online articles and blogs about sunrises and sunsets based on three factors: how many times each destination was mentioned; the number of Instagram posts for each destination that used the hashtag sunrise or sunset; and artificial brightness using the Light Pollution Map.

Unfortunately, none of Broward County’s best places to watch a sunset made Bounce’s worldwide list. Perhaps next year.
