Southend United sack manager Chris Powell after 11-game winless run

League One strugglers Southend United have sacked manager Chris Powell.

The club sit 20th in the third tier of English football, hovering above the drop zone on goal difference, and have failed to win a game in their last 11 matches.

A club statement said: "It is with much regret that the Club has this morning terminated Chris Powell’s contract.

"The results over a number of weeks, eleven games without a win, has impacted all concerned and immediate changes needed to be made.

"The Club’s interests are paramount, but the Board are nevertheless disappointed to see Chris Powell leave.

"Head of the Club’s highly successful Academy, Ricky Duncan, will take temporary charge of the first team squad."

Saturday's defeat against Peterborough proved to be the final straw for Southend chiefs as a fourth loss in five games leaves them looking over their shoulder.
