Southeastern train passengers ‘passed out’ after heating turned up in cold snap

Network Rail revealed Southeastern services will not improve until 2040 (Picture: PA Archive/PA Images)

London could be facing sub-zero conditions — but some commuters say they are suffering “unbearable” warm temperatures on train journeys.

Passengers compared the heating on some Southeastern rail services to a “sauna”.

Michelle Heaton, who works at BNP Paribas bank, claimed two women “passed out” on her journey from New Eltham to Charing Cross yesterday.

“Passengers had to offer them their seats and some water,” she said. “They got off at London Bridge — they were just boiling and sweating. I didn’t speak to them but they looked shaken up. The driver apologised and said, ‘If it was any consolation, I’m boiling as well.’”

She added: “The heating was absolutely ridiculous. My carriage was already crowded, and it was horrific because there was nowhere to go.”

Other passengers opened windows to keep cool. One wrote on Twitter: “Turn the heating off, please. Everyone is dressed for the weather; coats, hats, scarves, gloves. This is dangerous.” Another said: “It feels like a sauna.”

A Southeastern spokesman said: “Train heating is controlled by thermostats on each individual train and is set by our engineering depots. We advise passengers to contact us if they are on board one of our services and have concerns about the level of heating.”

Met Office forecasters said up to 10cm of snow could fall in parts of southern England tomorrow. In London, the temperature will dip to -2C tomorrow morning. There is a 60 per cent chance of snow in the capital from about 8pm tomorrow through to Friday morning.
