Southeastern delays: Major train route into London suspended for rest of day after landslip near Barnehurst

A major train route into London has been suspended for the rest of the day after a landslip in south-east London.

Southeastern said no trains will operate on the Bexleyheath line until at least tomorrow and other trains that normally run through the station will be diverted.

The landslip happened near Barnehurst station. The operator tweeted that there was a "large amount of displaced soil and trees blocking the line".

A signal failure at Lewisham was also causing severe delays for commuters this morning.

A Southeastern spokesman said: “No trains will operate on the Bexleyheath line and trains that would normally operate via Bexleyheath will be either diverted or revised.

UPDATE: the line will be closed all week

“A landslip has been reported near Barnehurst, causing significant amounts debris and trees to fall onto the line. The line is blocked in both directions.

“The line is expected to be closed for the rest of today whilst the landslip is assessed and work is carried out to clear it from the line."

In January 2016, hundreds of tonnes of dirt fell onto the tracks near Barnehurst causing days of misery for commuters.

Passengers have expressed their frustration on social media.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We're very sorry for the disruption to Southeastern services at Lewisham this morning.

“This was due to a fault with the points at the end of platform one. Combined with this morning's landslip at Barnehurst and to avoid further disruption we've been diverting trains away from Lewisham.

“Our engineers are now on site and we aim to fix the problem ahead of this evening’s peak. Please check before you travel, we’re very sorry again for the disruption.”
