A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Monday while she was walking on southbound Interstate 57 in south suburban Posen.

The 23-year-old woman was struck by a passing SUV after she stepped out of a vehicle that was pulled over on the road about 2:35 a.m. north of 147th Street, Illinois State police said.

The woman, who lived in Englewood, was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Autopsy results released Tuesday found she died from her injuries and ruled her death and accident.

All southbound lanes were shut down and traffic was diverted at 127th Street as police investigated, state police said. Lanes were reopened just before 7 a.m.

The driver of the SUV, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, state police said. A 39-year-old woman who was also in the SUV was not injured.

The investigation was ongoing.

On Sunday, a Shorewood man was hit and killed by a vehicle on the same expressway near Kedzie Avenue in Markham.
