Southampton vs Newcastle team news: Dwight Gayle replaces Joelinton up-front and Matt Ritchie returns

Steve Bruce handed Joelinton a rest for Newcastle United's clash at Southampton.

The Brazilian, who has been switched to the left-hand side in recent games, had to be content with a place on the bench with Dwight Gayle placed in Newcastle's front-line alongside Miguel Almiron at St Mary's.

Bruce recalled Isaac Hayden to his midfield engine room with Jonjo Shelvey also back in from the start.

Sean Longstaff was also only named on the bench while there was not even a squad place for teenage midfielder Matty Longstaff.

Bruce had other options on the bench though with Valentino Lazaro and speedy full-back DeAndre Yedlin desperate to play a part in the Premier League.

Despite complaining of soreness last week, Allan Saint-Maximin was back in the starting XI.

Full team: Dubravka, Rose, Lascelles, Fernandez, Manquillo, Ritchie, Shelvey, Hayden, Saint-Maximin, Gayle, Almiron

Subs: Darlow, Schar, Joelinton, Yedlin, Lazaro, S Longstaff, Bentaleb
